Al Roberts (Tom Neal) is a broke New York nightclub jazz pianist who decides to hitchhike to meet his girlfriend, Sue (Claudia Drake), who has recently left the band, to seek a better future in the industry of Hollywood. On that rainy night, a car stops to take him to Los Angeles, although at a certain point during the journey, Charles, the driver, will pass away suddenly and without apparent explanation. Fearing having to explain to the police, the pianist decides to impersonate the deceased, but does not count on the appearance of Vera (Ann Savage), an unscrupulous woman who knows the real Charles and who does not hesitate to decide to blackmail the poor man, Al. But these will not be the only problems that the protagonist faces, but the plot will become more and more complicated.
Splendid sample of film noir narrated in the form of flashbacks, and which is considered one of the best of the genre of all time.
Directed by the famous director Edgar G-Ulmer, known among other things, for being one of the pioneers of film noir.
