Teresa is forced by her parents to marry Nicolau, a much older man than her but willing to solve the economic problems of his family. Gradually she undergoes a strange marriage relationship, due to the morbid obsessions of her husband. The widowed Teresa inherited a considerable fortune. She moved to live in the country and she soon establishes relations with Rafael, a nineteen-year old boy. Teresa will acquire the personality of her deceased spouse up to an absolute identification with him.
